Last Word on Sport

British Players Abroad by Philip Meese - 31 Dec 2022 17:50

When writing for Last Word on Sport, I published several articles under certain categories. One of these focused on the numerous British players that tried their luck on the continent at certain points in their careers. The Intention was to write more than the five articles this series spanned, but they were fun to research, and very well received by readers.

These articles are still on the Last Word on Sport website, and the links for each one can be found below.

Gary Lineker

One of English football's greatest-ever goalscorers, this article focuses on his successful spell at F.C. Barcelona in the late 1980s.

Ian Rush

Still Liverpool's all-time top scorer during his two spells on Merseyside, the Welsh international spent the 1987-88 season in Italy with Juventus and was, perhaps unfairly, judged to be a failure.

David Platt

One of English football's greatest exports, thanks to a successful four-year spell with three different Italian clubs in the 1990s.

Mark Hughes

A bonafide Manchester United legend, his time at Old Trafford was interrupted by a two-year spell between 1986 & 1988, where he played for both F.C. Barcelona and Bayern Munich, with markedly different results.

Paul Lambert

A Zero-to-Hero story about a player very few people had heard of, who went to Borussia Dortmund, and ended up a Champions League winner.
